Description

This piece was done in Spring 2006.

-----

This is one of three pieces that I did as part of my Independent Study in Colored Pencils on Metal. My subject matter was Greek mythology.

The snakes were dieformed out of copper, soldered together, then sandblasted & colored with Prismacolor pencil. The chain is all fine silver wire, made out of handmade links & assembled myself.

This piece is inspired by the mythological character Medusa. In the version that I like, Medusa was once a beautiful woman, but angered Athena when she desecrated her temple by having sex (possibly raped because of her beauty) with the god Poseidon inside it. Athena then turned Medusa's hair to snakes and made it so that her glance would turn all living creatures to stone. Medusa is one of Greek mythology's most well known characters besides the gods. I like to think of her as an unfortunate creature; yet another who was mistreated by the gods. She was later beheaded by Perseus, and spawned the horse Pegasus.

You do some really beautiful work. Have you ever considered working the Ren Faires? I am gearing up to join the Faire circuit w/ my knots. the few I have been to locally have encouraged me to get into jewelry. Would you be interested in working together on some pieces?
